Resonentur: A Concert of Pipe Organ Music from Montserrat, Barcelona
In celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Abadia de Montserrat and the 130th anniversary of the Benedictine presence in the Philippines, the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, through Rev. Dom Eugenio N. Labrague, OSB, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, Alsina, Millenium Montserrat, and 快猫短视频, through the Office of the Vice President for Linkages and International Affairs, successfully organized Resonentur: A Concert of Pipe Organ Music from Montserrat, Barcelona on February 25, 2025.
The concert featured the esteemed Spanish organist and pianist Vicenç Prunés Lloret, assisted by his son, Ignasi Prunés de Riba, an equally accomplished pianist. Their performance showcased the rich and historical musical tradition as early as 1669 of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat in Barcelona, an institution renowned for its contributions to sacred and liturgical music.
The program was carefully curated to highlight the evolution of organ music within the monastery. The first segment of the concert focused on Baroque and Classical compositions, reflecting the early musical influences that shaped Montserrat’s tradition. The latter part introduced more contemporary works, including pieces by Dom Paul Benoit, OSB, a Benedictine monk from Luxembourg, whose compositions brought a unique and distinct color to the evening’s repertoire while remaining deeply rooted in the Benedictine musical heritage.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Mr. Alvaro García Moreno, First Secretary of the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, Abbot Ignasi M. Fossas, OSB, Abbot President of the Subiaco Cassinese Congregation, and the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat headed by Rt. Rev. Abbot Austin P. Cadiz, OSB. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipontentiary of Palestine in the Philippines, H.E. Mounir Y.K. Anastas, also graced the event with his presence. The concert also brought together the Bedan community and representatives from other invited institutions, such as, Santa Isabel College, Centro Escolar University, St. Scholastica’s College, Holy Trinity Parish, University of Santo Tomas, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Siliman University, University of the Visayas, RCBC Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines -Diliman, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, among others.
Through Resonentur, the organizers not only honored the longstanding Benedictine musical tradition but also strengthened cultural and academic ties between the Philippines and Spain. The concert served as a testament to the enduring legacy of Montserrat’s sacred music and its profound influence on the global liturgical landscape.
